If you are missing teeth, dental implants placed at our Brooklyn office can restore health, functionality, and a beautiful appearance to your smile. Dental implants are small titanium posts that are surgically placed in the jaw bone to replace lost tooth roots. Dr. Gary Herskovits is a rare dentist who can perform dental implant placement surgery and provide the necessary customized dentures and crowns to complete your smile. Placing implants typically requires two surgeries, with three to six months of healing time in between. However, in certain cases, Dr. Herskovits can provide immediate-placement implants, allowing you to arrive at our office with missing teeth, and leave with a complete and balanced smile. If you are suffering with a compromised smile, do not wait any longer to achieve a complete and healthy smile. Contact us today to learn more about how dental implants can benefit you.
Placing Dental Implants
The first step in placing dental implants is to examine the upper and lower jaws with x-rays. Adequate bone mass is crucial to this process. If you have waited a long time to replace missing teeth, the jaw bone may have begun to atrophy, or shrink. In this case, Dr. Herskovits may need to perform a bone graft, a process of augmenting the jaw with donor tissue, before implant surgery can commence. It is also crucial to make certain that any implants placed in the upper jaw will not disturb the sinus cavities. Dr. Herskovits may need to perform a sinus lift, a process of adding bone tissue to the upper jaw and repositioning sinus tissue to accommodate an implant. Dr. Herskovits can also perform any necessary extractions before placing dental implants.
Implant surgery begins with an incision being made in the gums, exposing the jaw bone. A small pilot hole is drilled into the bone, and the threaded implant is inserted. Next, the gums are stitched closed over the top of the implant. Over the next three to six months, the jawbone and the implant become fused in a process called osseointegration. Once this process is complete, you will return for a second surgery. An incision is once again placed in the gums, exposing the implant. A special abutment is attached, and the gums are stitched closed around the abutment, leaving it exposed above the gum line. Once the gums have healed, Dr. Herskovits can begin crafting your custom crown or denture.
The type and number of implants you receive depends upon the number of teeth you need replaced, the type of restoration you'll be receiving, and a few other factors. Depending on your needs and the state of your jaws, Dr. Herskovits may be able to provide same-day implant placement. You and Dr. Herskovits will have an opportunity to discuss this option during your initial consultation. You will also have the opportunity to discuss your dental implants cost, which is dependent upon a few factors.
