What Is Cosmetic Dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry is a type of dentistry that focuses on improving the appearance of your smile, not just the health of your teeth and gums. If you find yourself uncomfortable with your smile and sometimes stop yourself from smiling, then cosmetic dentistry is something you should consider. Here at Brooklyn Smile, we provide a variety of cosmetic dental services:
The aim of each of these treatments is to enhance the beauty of your smile. Through cosmetic dentistry, we can help you achieve a more beautiful, inviting smile that boosts your self-esteem and allows you to smile with confidence.
We may suggest cosmetic dentistry for any of our patients who would like to improve the beauty of their smile. Cosmetic dentistry might be the solution you need if your smile is flawed by imperfections such as:
- Cracked, chipped, fractured or broken teeth
- Gaps and spaces between teeth
- Discolored, yellowed or stained teeth
- Slightly misaligned or uneven teeth
- One or more missing teeth
- Teeth that appear too long, too short or too pointed
- Very worn teeth
- Misshapen teeth
Dental Stains and Teeth Whitening Trays
There are two types of stains that you can have on your teeth. Surface, or “extrinsic” stains, caused by smoking and diet occur on the surface of the enamel. “Intrinsic” stains are deeper and happen inside the tooth.
You can remove surface stains on your teeth by using a whitening toothpaste. These kinds of toothpastes usually contain special abrasives that gently polish the teeth as well as certain chemicals that can help break down stains. These toothpastes can be tough on tooth enamel, so make sure to always read labels when using them — some should only be used temporarily.
Intrinsic stains cannot be helped by whitening toothpastes. To get that brighter smile, you will need to actually change the color of your teeth. You can do this using a bleaching agent. The bleaching agents most products use are hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These chemicals break stains into smaller pieces, making their colorless concentrated and leaving your teeth much whiter! A great way to do this that is convenient and professional is with our whitening trays.
What Are Veneers?
For teeth with aesthetic imperfections that go beyond stains, such as chips or slight alignment problems, veneers could be a good solution. A veneer is a custom-made, thin layer of porcelain or resin that covers the front surface of teeth.
Veneers improve the overall aesthetics of a smile by changing the shape, closing spaces between front teeth, and covering up significant stains from coffee or red wine. The porcelain veneers are hand-painted and glazed for the most aesthetic and natural tooth look possible.
Invisalign®
Invisalign treatment uses a series of soft plastic aligners that fit comfortably over your teeth to gradually and gently straighten your smile. No wires or brackets to irritate your mouth! Unlike traditional braces, you can remove your Invisalign aligners during your oral hygiene routines and while eating your favorite meals. Brushing and flossing are not complicated, and you do not have to give up any of the foods you love.
For the first few days of each stage of your Invisalign treatment, you may feel minor discomfort as your teeth get used to the added pressure, similar to what traditional braces patients experience after adjustments. This is perfectly normal and a sign that the aligners are doing their job.
The difference is that, with Invisalign, you may be tempted to take the aligners off to relieve the pressure. Resist that temptation because it will delay your results! You should wear your aligners at all times during your treatment, except during meals and snacks and while brushing and flossing your teeth. Wearing them less often will make your treatment take longer.
