Oral Hygiene
Why Is Oral Hygiene Important?
Good oral hygiene is one of the most important steps you can take to maintain a healthy smile. Daily brushing and flossing help remove plaque and bacteria that can accumulate on the teeth and gums, supporting long-term oral health and overall wellness.
Combined with regular dental visits, proper oral hygiene habits help keep your teeth and gums healthy while reducing the risk of common dental concerns.
How to Brush Your Teeth
Our doctors recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush and brushing at least twice daily. Position the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle where the teeth and gums meet, using gentle circular motions to clean all tooth surfaces thoroughly.
Be sure to clean the outside, inside, and chewing surfaces of your teeth. When brushing the inside surfaces of the front teeth, hold the brush vertically and use gentle up-and-down strokes.
Take your time and brush carefully to ensure all areas of the mouth are cleaned. After brushing, rinse thoroughly to remove loosened plaque and debris.
How to Floss
Flossing helps clean between teeth and along the gumline where a toothbrush may not reach. Daily flossing is an important part of maintaining healthy teeth and gums.
- Break off approximately 18 inches of floss.
- Wrap most of the floss around your middle fingers.
- Hold the floss firmly between your thumbs and index fingers.
- Gently guide the floss between your teeth using a back-and-forth motion.
- Curve the floss around each tooth in a “C” shape.
- Move the floss up and down along the tooth surface and just beneath the gumline.
- Use a clean section of floss as you move from tooth to tooth.
- Rinse thoroughly when finished.
If you are new to flossing, mild gum sensitivity may occur initially. Consistent flossing and proper technique typically help improve gum health over time.
Caring for Sensitive Teeth
Some patients experience temporary tooth sensitivity due to dental treatment, worn enamel, gum recession, or other factors. If sensitivity persists, our team can recommend products and treatment options designed to help improve comfort and protect your teeth.
Choosing Oral Hygiene Products
With so many oral hygiene products available, choosing the right options can feel overwhelming. Our team is happy to recommend products based on your individual needs and oral health goals.
Electric toothbrushes are safe and effective for many patients and can help improve brushing consistency. Water flossers and oral irrigators may also be helpful additions to your daily routine when used alongside brushing and flossing.
Interdental brushes, floss picks, specialty toothpastes, and other oral hygiene aids may be beneficial depending on your specific needs. We encourage patients to discuss these products with our team to determine which options are most appropriate.
Professional Dental Cleanings
Even with excellent brushing and flossing habits, professional dental cleanings remain an important part of maintaining oral health. During your cleaning appointment, our team removes plaque and tartar buildup from areas that can be difficult to reach at home.
Regular dental visits allow us to monitor your oral health, provide preventive care, and help keep your smile healthy and looking its best for years to come.
